There is a garden at the Valley of the Moon Children’s Home. Thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers, the garden area has been revitalized and expanded. Our volunteers have installed new fencing designed to protect the garden from animal intrusion. Raised planting boxes have been installed; the soil has been amended; the new garden is ready to be planted.
Twice a week a volunteer garden teacher comes and teaches the children about growing and maintaining a garden. The children participate in planning and decision-making. They plant, water, weed, fertilize and harvest food and flowers; the food and flowers are used in cooking classes and meals at the Home. The children learn about food groups, nutrients, and uses of the fruits and vegetables that they grow; the garden provides a sustainable source of food for the children who reside at the Home.
Our old orchard is being revitalized; new fruit trees are being planted and dead and diseased trees are being removed. The new orchard area will provide seasonal fresh fruit and a wonderful place for the children to play and learn.
